Stabroek Market has been Georgetown's main market site since the Town Council made it official in 1842. The present iron and steel building, with its clock tower, was designed by the American engineer Nathaniel McKay and built in 1880 and 1881 by the Edgemoor Iron Company of Delaware. It covers about 80,000 square feet on Water Street.

The usual meeting point is the Water Street side, outside the main clock-tower entrance. Friday afternoon and Saturday morning are the busiest; if the front is closed off, the driver goes round and moves the pickup to Brickdam, then calls you. Pickpocketing is a known problem in the crowds, so keep your phone out of sight until the app shows the car has arrived.
Works on the market in 2026
The roof and canopy were repaired in two phases in March 2026, with vendors moved onto closed-off streets for a week at a time. In July 2026 the government announced that the market will be restored and extended over five years under the Georgetown Restoration Initiative. Expect fenced sections and moved stalls around the building.
The minibus park and the stelling
The minibus parks for routes along the coast surround the market, and the stelling behind it is where speedboats leave for Vreed-en-Hoop. A ride from Kitty or Campbellville is about GYD 2,000; Kingston and the Marriott are about 2.3 km, about GYD 2,000.
Stabroek to the airports
CJIA is about 41 km, about GYD 20,500, 45 to 55 minutes off-peak and longer when the city empties after 4 pm. Ogle Airport is about 13 km by road, about GYD 5,700.
