Rides along the East Coast Demerara, from Annandale through Mahaica.
The East Coast Demerara starts where Georgetown ends at Kitty and Turkeyen, home of the University of Guyana since 1963, and runs east along the Atlantic past Ogle, Le Ressouvenir, Annandale, Lusignan, Buxton and Enmore to Mahaica. Two roads serve it: the East Coast public road through the villages, and the Railway Embankment road behind them, which is being widened to four lanes from Sheriff Street to Enmore.
Villages with a history
Buxton was bought in 1840 by about 130 freed Africans from nearby estates, who pooled their savings to buy Plantation New Orange Nassau. At Enmore, five sugar workers were shot during a protest on 16 June 1948; the Enmore Martyrs monument by Dennis Williams was unveiled in 1977. Lusignan has the country's only golf course.

From Stabroek Market, Le Ressouvenir is about 15 km, about GYD 6,500; Annandale about 18 km and Buxton about 18.5 km, about GYD 7,600; Mahaica about 36 km, about GYD 18,500. Ogle Airport, Giftland Mall and MovieTowne are all on the near end of the corridor.
From the East Coast to CJIA
The fastest way south is usually the Ogle to Eccles highway across to the East Bank. From Buxton, CJIA is about 60 km, about GYD 27,000, and from Mahaica about 77 km, about GYD 33,500, roughly two hours. Traffic is heavy inbound in the morning, with known slow points at Beterverwagting and Chateau Margot, and outbound from late afternoon, and speed cameras on the East Coast public road issue electronic tickets.
