The East Bank Demerara is the strip of villages between the Demerara River and the backlands, from Houston on the city's southern edge to Timehri and CJIA. The road south passes Providence, Eccles, Grove and Diamond, and GuyWay's own hub is at Greenfield, Providence.
Three roads north and south
The East Bank public road is the original route. Heroes Highway, opened in December 2023, runs inland from Eccles to Great Diamond, and the Ogle to Eccles highway, opened in June 2025, links the East Bank with the East Coast across former cane fields, 11.8 km. The app's road routing chooses between them by traffic, which is why two quotes for the same trip at different times can differ slightly.
The bridges across the river
Since 5 October 2025 cars cross the Demerara on the new Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, a four-lane bridge from Nandy Park to La Grange that never opens for ships. It is toll-free; the old floating Harbour Bridge at Peter's Hall, opened in 1978, is closed. Tolls on Guyana's main bridges were abolished on 1 August 2025.

From Stabroek Market, Houston is about 4 km, about GYD 2,350; Grove about 14 km, about GYD 6,100; Timehri about 41.5 km. From Houston, CJIA is about 38 km, about GYD 19,500. Inbound traffic peaks in the early morning and outbound from late afternoon, and speed cameras on Heroes Highway issue electronic tickets.

Do I pay a toll to cross the Demerara River?
No. The new Demerara River Bridge is toll-free, and the old Harbour Bridge is closed.
East Bank Demerara to CJIA, how long?
From Houston allow about an hour off-peak for the 38 km, longer in the evening peak. From Providence or Diamond, 35 to 45 minutes.
Can I get a pickup far up the East Bank, past Diamond?
Yes, as far as Timehri and CJIA. Past Diamond, schedule the ride an hour or more ahead.
