Taxi in Diamond, East Bank Demerara
Diamond pickups from the housing schemes close to CJIA and Providence.
Diamond grew from Plantation Diamond, a sugar estate established in 1753 on the East Bank Demerara. Sugar has gone, but the distillery stayed: Demerara Distillers still makes rum at Diamond, including the El Dorado range, and the El Dorado Rum Heritage Centre is on the estate. Around it, the Great and Little Diamond housing schemes, started when Irfaan Ali was housing minister, turned much of the old cane land into housing.
Getting to your street in the scheme
The schemes are big and the avenues look alike, so pin your gate rather than typing the scheme name. Avenues A and B and Third Avenue were upgraded as alternatives to the busy Diamond junction on the public road, and Third Avenue links Diamond with Grove. Schedule early rides the evening before.
